MotherToBaby is a service of the non-profit Organization of Teratology Information Specialists (OTIS). MotherToBaby is dedicated to providing evidence-based information to mothers, health care professionals, and the general public about medications and other exposures during pregnancy and while breastfeeding. What are MotherToBaby affiliates?
MotherToBaby affiliates are confidential telephone services that provide accurate and current information about the possible effects of a particular drug or substance on a pregnancy or while breastfeeding. Call 1-866-626-6847 to reach an affiliate near you.
Who can call MotherToBaby?
MotherToBaby experts answer questions from women who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning a pregnancy. Spouses or other family members can also call MotherToBaby. MotherToBaby also answers questions from all health care professionals and the general public.

MotherToBaby experts can discuss the risks of any kind of exposure during pregnancy or breastfeeding, including:
- Prescription medications
- Over-the-counter medications

Who will I speak with when I call MotherToBaby?
You will speak with one of our trained experts. MotherToBaby experts have a variety of backgrounds in the health care field and include doctors, genetic counselors, nurses, and researchers.
What can I expect when I call MotherToBaby?
Your MotherToBaby expert will answer your questions by discussing relevant research-based information, and explaining the possible benefits and risks of your exposure. Your MotherToBaby expert may ask you some questions about:
- Exposures to medications, chemicals, illnesses or other exposures of concern
- The dates during which the exposure(s) occurred and the dose or amount of the exposure
- Your health, the health of other family members, and about any previous pregnancies
- Your interest in participating in a research study
All of your personal identifiable information will be kept completely confidential.
Does MotherToBaby conduct research studies?
Yes. MotherToBaby helps contribute to available information about the safety of medications and other exposures during pregnancy and breastfeeding by conducting research studies. Taking part in a study would NOT require you to change anything about your normal routine, including taking your prescribed medications. It will require phone interviews during pregnancy and after the birth of your child. Your participation can mean you’re taking an extra step to gain better information about the health of your baby. What is OTIS?
OTIS is the professional scientific society made up of the experts that provide the MotherToBaby service, and the researchers that perform the MotherToBaby pregnancy studies. OTIS stands for the Organization of Teratology Information Specialists. Teratology is the study of birth defects caused by exposures during pregnancy.
